This article highlights the significance of the paratexts in reading the medieval Arabic qaīda (ode). These paratexts were mostly comments of medieval readers on poets, their artistic moods, and styles. Some of these assessments also pertain to the poems and relate to their
aesthetic properties, artistry, and palaeography. Such paratexts show how the qaīda was seen as a dialectic process of production and reception, performance and evaluation. Despite their importance for the understanding of poetry, modern scholarship of medieval Arabic poetry has
not much assimilated these paratexts into its exploration of the qaīda. This article intends to show the significance of the paratexts for reading the medieval Arabic qaīda and looking into its aesthetics. The qaīda nūniyyah of the Andalusian poet
Ibn Zaydfln (d. 463/1070) will be taken as an example and examined in the framework of the paratexts proposed by its medieval readers.
