  • From Oaxacan wood carvings to dessert kitchens in provincial France, Critical Craft features thirteen ethnographies which examine what constitutes "craft" across a wide variety of practices from all over the globe. Challenging the conventional understanding of craft as a survival, a revival, or something that resists capitalism, the book focuses instead on the designers, DIY enthusiasts, computer programmers, and traditional artisans who see their labor as craft. Studying individuals and communities who claim a practice as their own, the authors reveal the sometimes conflicting voices and the great flexibility in terms of the activities which are labelled as "craft". Moving beyond regional studies of heritage artisanship, the book argues that ideas of craft shape the distinct engagements with materials, people, and the economy and are part of a larger cosmopolitan dialogue of power and identity. Case studies from countries such as Mexico, Nigeria, India, Taiwan, the Philippines, France, and the United States draw together evidence based on linguistics, microsociology, and participant observation to uncover the shifting terrain on which those engaged in craft are operating. What emerges is a fascinating account of craft as an integral part of contemporary global change.
