• The unforested areas of middle latitudes were not all dominated by grasses and herbaceous vegetation. Areas equal to, if not greater than, those of the grasslands were occupied by a vegetation which was composed mainly of woody plants. Indeed, over great expanses of territory, low-growing woody plants are still completely dominant. In the previous chapter it was noted that, in many cases, these scrublands occupy even drier areas than those dominated by grasses.
