Martin Luther argued that the Bible should be the foundation of theology and church life. Luther encouraged and supported a younger colleague, Philip Melanchthon, who was appointed to the newly created professorship of Greek at the University of Wittenberg in 1518. Melanchthon was committed to the understanding of language and brought competence and drive to bear on the reading and analysis of the Bible in the Wittenberg movement. Melanchthon contributed not only his knowledge of original biblical languages to the Reformation, but he also applied his humanistic understanding of language to the Lutheran theology of sola scriptura. Melanchthon stressed that the biblical texts should be understood as a single unit and that they should always be interpreted according to linguistic rules. In this way, Melanchthon wanted to ensure a scholarly interpretation that rested on the literal sense of the text and so to support theoretically a theology founded on Scripture alone.
