  • It argues that Shakespeare's passionate and sensuous plays also convey to us a cognitive difficulty that requires more than linguistic attention or historical empathy to unravel: it requires thinking, and the concepts of philosophy can provide us with tools, however imperfect, to aid us in that thinking. Philosophy can also help us to reimagine Shakespeare's representation of individuality, character, and destiny, particularly during certain moments in the play when a character's relationship to being or identity becomes an enigma so baffling those new ideas and speculative systems are needed to help us make sense of them. Twelfth Night starts to look as though it promises to reveal a solution to an enigmatic problem about the relationship between being and the future, and between character and fate. Human logos are distinguished from animal communication as articulated from unarticulated voice. Articulation, properly speaking, cannot be heard.
