This chapter provides an overview of pertinent literature related to the current state of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and sexually transmitted infections (STI) prevention among college students in the United States (US). It examines critical areas for college students related to current HIV/STI statistics; the link between HIV and STIs; HIV/AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) knowledge; HIV sexual risk behavior; condom use; substance use; and access to HIV/STI testing, care, and prevention services. According to the American College Health Association (ACHA), college students in the US engage in sexual behaviors that place them at a significant risk for HIV/STI infections. The prevalence of substance use experimentation during adolescence places young people at a high risk for HIV infection. Late adolescence reflects a critical period for adolescents because interpersonal challenges that are experienced can result in psychopathology.
