• The sixtieth anniversary of the outbreakof the Korean War is an ideal time to re-explore its complex history. To be sure, the conflict is no longer 'forgotten', as the well-worn cliché would have it. 1 On the contrary, we have the traditional, Western-centred accounts of the 1950s and 1960s that saw the war as a product of Soviet-inspired communist aggression. We have the Westernfocused histories of the 1970s and 1980s that used declassified official documents to uncover the actions and motives of the United States and its allies. And in the last two decades, we have numerous studies based on Russian and Chinese documents that provide a much clearer picture of what was occurring behind the Iron Curtain. 2
