  • As discussed elsewhere in this volume, the time for rethinking automobility isurgent. Sustainable greenhouse-gas levels will not be achieved in a globallyequitable way if the United States, as forecasted, increases its motor vehiclesfrom the present 250 million automobiles to 325 million vehicles in 2050. IfChina had the same per capita car ownership rate as the United States, therewould be more than one billion cars in China today – which is equal to theworldwide rate (see Chapter 2 by Martin in this volume). And the reality is thatfor the foreseeable future an electric car is a carbon-burning car. If developednations expect China, India, and other developing nations to realistically addressglobal warming, they will need not only to provide leadership, but also decreasetheir appetites for excessive, on-demand, high-speed automobility. North Ameri-cans in particular must undertake a considerable restructuring of how theyorganize cities, and that must include rethinking automobility.
