In recent years, a wide variety of consensus reports published by the National Academies and other groups have based their recommendations on a growing body of research on how people learn in the disciplines (NRC, 2007, 2009, 2012). In science and engineering education, the new Framework for K-12 Science Education (NRC, 2012) drew not only on findings from the learning sciences, it also drew upon empirically grounded conceptions of science and engineering practices developed within science studies. The Framework's vision of scientific and engineering practices and the development of scientific understanding is also reflected in the Next Generation Science Standards: By states, for states (NGSS Lead States, 2013), which are now being adopted by several states across the country.
