  • This chapter considers Austin Farrer from two perspectives. First, it considers the fertility of Farrer's intellectual legacy through the prism of Basil Mitchell's philosophy of religion, focusing on Mitchell's unjustly neglected Faith and Criticism. Second, it explores the profundity of Farrer's thought in the light of the English Romantic inheritance. The natural mystery which is the starting point of rational theology is the finite manifesting itself as the shadow of the infinite. Metaphysics is the description of natural mysteries by the criticism of analogies. Imagination is to reflect upon the relation of the empirical eye and what our great metaphysical bard William Shakespeare calls 'the mind's eye'. Wordsworth's power was primarily in this creative liaison of eye and mind's eye. The exploration of the poetic within the canonical prophetic writings is largely a Romantic contribution to theology which goes back to another great Oxford divine, Robert Lowth.
