This letter from Denis Darcy, one of the successive architects responsible for the
upkeep of Reims Cathedral in the nineteenth century, described a historical moment
when the west portal of the north transept of Reims Cathedral, the so-called “Porte
romane” or Virgin Portal, was cleared of a masonry wall that had completely
obscured it from view for an undetermined period of time (Figure 2.1).2 As it
