• In this chapter, consideration is given to the methodological options available when undertaking research on prisons, looking at both the desk-based and historical approaches, to the 'in-prison' methods of interviews, observations, focus groups, and surveys and their associated challenges within a prison context. Collections of methods as ethnography and evaluation and appreciative inquiry are considered, along with sensory methods and arts-based approaches and their respective values. Finally, the chapter considers the importance of including the voice of the participant in the research process, through participatory action research, correspondence methods, and convict criminology.
