• In January 1933, Adolf Hitler was appointed German chancellor and by April of that year the Nazi Party had gained absolute power in Germany. When President Hindenburg died in 1934, Hitler became the new German leader and started to re-arm the country. Even before this there had been concerns in Britain and France about the threat of a new European war, and this worry was strengthened when Germany withdrew from a conference on disarmament, as well as leaving the League of Nations in October 1933. In short, Britain now saw the need to embark on a re-armament programme.
