  • Devotion to the Passion and death of Jesus Christ, one of the hallmarks of medieval spirituality, underwent some profound changes over the course of the Middle Ages, not least in relation to the question of the suffering humanity of Christ. The transition from early medieval depictions of the crucified Christ as triumphant hero (the Christus Victor of Gustaf Aulen’s famous study1) to the emaciated and tortured Imago Pietatis of the later Middle Ages was not absolute, however; the theme of Christ’s victory on the cross over the powers of darkness would persist, albeit now ceding preeminence to its more recent usurper. This paper examines this broad shift in emphasis through the lens of the arma Christi or, more loosely, the instruments or symbols of Christ’s Passion, as manifested in medieval and early modern Ireland. Representations of the arma Christi in iconography and literature of the period can quite usefully reflect in microcosm the evolving shape of medieval and early modern Passion devotion.
