• This chapter explores the causes of the doubts, doubts that, seen cumulatively, are both symptomatic of and responsible for a gradual shift towards a post-didactic memory. It utilizes a memory culture in which the core assumption of didactic memory–namely that the lessons of Nazism must be imparted to Germans in a manner which presupposes their need for ethical instruction–no longer obtains. The difference between didactic and post-didactic memory can be illustrated by the discussion surrounding how best to react to the end of the ban on the republication of Adolf Hitler’s autobiography Mein Kampf, a prohibition which has been in place since 1945, but which lapsed in 2015 when copyright expired. Neither Welzer nor Jureit reflect, in the cited publications, on their own generational positions. Germany can be trusted to embrace the complexities without losing sight of responsibility for memory of the Holocaust.
