  • This chapter describes a participatory design research project among learning scientists, public librarians, informal science education staff, and staff from Native American–serving community organizations who are jointly focused on designing family-centered and culturally expansive STEAM learning experiences with nondominant communities. The program that is described in some detail is TechTales, a program that invited families to conceptualize new relationships to technology (such as robotics and Scratch) and desettle some of the traditional knowledge relationships associated with educational programming. Perspectives and voices from partners, including from staff at the Seattle Public Library, are shared. The accumulated wisdom of this experience is translated into new possibilities and considerations for participatory design and design-based implementation research in the future. This chapter describes a participatory design research project among learning scientists, public librarians, informal science education staff, and staff from Native American– serving community organizations who are jointly focused on designing family-centered and culturally expansive science, technology, engineering, art, math (STEAM) learning experiences with nondominant communities. Libraries serve vital roles in communities not only for access to print media but also to educational programs and to digital technologies. Importantly, the role of libraries and librarians is also changing, with less emphasis on curating and storing physical collections and more emphasis on creating spaces for people to collaborate and generate new ideas. The library is working toward a community-centered model for all of its programs and services. Participatory design research (PDR) is a form of design research that takes the work of equity as central to design and research aiming to both contribute to sustainable social change and to expand foundational knowledge of human learning.
