• In this paper, I argue how the construction of a madrasa, Jamia Salafia, in Benaras, has strengthened the backward caste Ansaris of the city, inserting them into the power structure of the Ahle Hadis leadership. The madrasa, through its transnational links with Gulf countries like Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, has redefined the dynamics of the intra-maslaki relationship of the Ahle Hadis ulama. Central to this redefinition is the variety of functions that Jamia Salafia has been performing during the last 48 years; namely, as the rallying point for the popular mobilisation of resources and the consolidation of the Indian Ahle Hadis people along maslaki lines, which later, in association with other factors, became the reason for rifts among the Ahle Hadis ulama. To make sense of this dimension of redefinition, I use the concepts of 'centre' and 'periphery', as they help convey the nature of the change that has characterised the relations between Jamia Salafia and other prominent Ahle Hadis madrasas in recent years. The tension between the centre and the periphery proves to be progressive in the sense that it contributes towards a fragmentation of authority.
