• The Scottish author Thomas Carlyle (1795-1881) wrote historiography, fiction, and critical essays, gaining him the reputation of the Victorian 'sage'. Famous for his history of The French Revolution (1837), one of the inspirations for Charles Dickens's (1812-70) A Tale of Two Cities (1859), and for polemical works such as On Heroes, Hero-Worship, and the Heroic in History (1841) and Past and Present (1843), the young, still progressive Carlyle had been impressed by his reading of the literature and philosophy of early German Romanticism, writing in periodical pieces that introduced the works of luminaries such as Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) and Novalis (1772-1801) (Georg Philipp Friedrich Freiherr von Hardenberg) to the British public.
