A common practice in cinema is to intercut between storylines, characters, locations, perspectives, or time periods. The reasons for intercutting are myriad. Intercutting can allow us a sense that two things are happening at the same time. It can allow us the impression that two things are related or will become related. Events in one intercut story can provide emotional context for the other part of the intercut story. It's also useful to make two long storylines more interesting by jumping back and forth between them, allowing for leaps in time that wouldn't otherwise be possible. Oftentimes, these intercuts are written into the script, but often, they are not; and for the timings of those transitions to remain the same between the script to final film is probably rare.
