• Deeply rooted in Libya as a typical Mediterranean community, the Maltese experienced the long-term transition of the Italian colonialism. On one hand, it represented one of the most advanced communities of the region for its historical Mediterranean connection spreading from Malta for centuries, on the other, it was strictly tied to the British cultural and political system. The implementation of the Italian colonial statutes posed the issue of the assimilation and the forced conversion to a pro-Italian community. Fascism accelerated that process and finally determined the uprooting of the Maltese from Libya.
