  • John Tiptoft (1427–70), Earl of Worcester, was educated at University College, Oxford, where during the early 1440s he was already planning to make a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. He discussed this ambition with a fellow student, John Rous (c.1420/25–91) of Warwick, who advised him to take an artist with him to draw the birds, animals and other memorable sights that he might encounter on his journey.1 Tiptoft later served as Lord Treasurer of England (1452–4), a Privy Councillor (1453) and Joint Keeper of the Seal (1454–7). These roles placed him in direct contact with the Venetian Senate and its merchants who travelled to London. Each year the Venetian trading galleys brought eight butts of malmsey wine: four for the king, two for the Lord Chancellor and two for the Lord Treasurer. The king also received other luxurious gifts such as those delivered in 1458 which included two painted chests filled with majolica pots containing ‘syruped confections, green ginger, melon and quince’ and twenty ‘gilt glass guard-shaped [gourd-shaped] flasks of rosolio [distilled spirits]’.2 Tiptoft is also thought to have corresponded with a Venetian sea captain, probably Ser Lorenzo Moro (Mouro), who had commanded a pilgrim galley in 1441 and by the mid-1450s was in overall command of Venetian galleys trading with London and Bruges.3
