• Death as a fantasy-image has been integral to the exploration of how the depth psychological concept of soul is pertinent to the activities and relationships of BDSM and kink. The death-image is core to the nature of soul and has an inherent connection to BDSM. The psychological aspect of death functions as an archetypal symbol to express the limits of human consciousness and what lies beyond. The mythic Underworld has been among the great cultural metaphors to express the mystery and horror of death. From the eighteenth century to the present, the Gothic idiom has been another medium for exploring death as an archetypal image. Sigmund Freud, C. G. Jung, and James Hillman all participated in the Gothic idiom, which also provides a source of inspiration for the rich erotic fantasy material of BDSM and kink. The philosopher Georges Bataille considered eroticism to be permeated with the mystery and ecstasy of death. In the activities and relationships of kink and BDSM, the soul enters with numinous intensity through its special relation with death as the ultimate other.
