  • This chapter introduces books that demonstrate people investigating or working toward career, vocational, or other work-related goals; figuring out/ constructing identities in terms of work and social structures; making and recovering from mistakes; and growing in maturity, skill and wisdom. It examines the ethical, aesthetic, and service dimensions of work through story. It makes connections to 21st Century skills, examining how authors and characters in NA Literature measure up in terms of the ability to collaborate; navigate social media; think critically and creatively; and use technology. A text sets explores the concept and construct of becoming in fiction and nonfiction. A second compiles a group of titles relating to food-related careers and passions. Book talks offer a way for librarians and teachers to serve in their Readers' Advisory role of matching individual readers with relevant literature. There is abundant fiction featuring characters who are navigating new physical, intellectual, spiritual, and emotional spaces as they explore trades and/or enter careers or military service. There are also biographies and memoirs; and informational books offering guidance about how to succeed and flourish in various trades and types of work. A recurring theme in many of these books has to do with mentors and mentoring. Writing and thinking prompts are provided to foster deeper reflection and application as students read. Instructional strategies include a writing activity to help students explore their own paths to becoming in relation to work; and applying a type of criticism called the Youth Lens to New Adult literature.
