  • We are told that the future is digital and that technology development will contribute to a more sustainable living, simplifying and improving routines and production systems. Technology development does, however, also imply a production culture, with different agendas, value systems, and incentives. Few of these are explicitly tied to the justification for the production itself. In art and technology development by female artists, however, the value system and potential sustainability is one of the driving factors in the production, underlining the semantic and ethical dimensions of technology development. In this chapter, we argue that female artists connected to the bio-art and media art movements propose a "feminist" (Rosi Braidotti) or "queer" (Sasha Kagan) take on technological development and innovation cultures, where sustainability plays a vital and has a more fundamental position in relation to technology and society. The term "semantics" is introduced, or re-introduced, as an ability to work with meaning structures and degrees of importance in technology innovation systems. Semantics can be tied to the entire meaning production around the system, and we here suggest that female artists can alter the sustainability consciousness through such a meaning producing awareness in art technology projects.
