  • Many people with dysarthria face the prospect of employing alternative and augmentative means of communication (AAC). Dysarthria is often seen as robbing individuals of their identity and the robotic sounds of many AAC devices only exacerbate this. Recently developed technologies enable people with dysarthria to preserve their own voice for deployment on AAC devices - known as voice banking. Two closely related strategies are message and video banking. This chapter introduces these approaches. Choosing banking raises more issues than simply authenticity of articulation. Those involved have to face issues of long-term decline, speech loss and even death. Based on a case of a man with multiple system atrophy, this chapter charts how the sensitive topic of inevitable speech-voice loss was broached; how the idea of voice, message and video banking was handled and how the three were finally successfully implemented.
