Symbolic interpretations of the mirror found in Eastern and Western “mirror tales” reflect what Carl Jung calls the primary psychological difference between East and West: that of an introverted spiritual style prevalent in the East and an extroverted psychological one found in the West. This chapter delves into the symbolism of the mirror from the perspective of three distinct cultural tales in an effort to reveal underlying cultural attitudes and values that unconsciously influence a culture. As deeper expressions of psychological truth, these stories offer insight into the importance of necessary cultural “self-reflection” as revealed in the unique lens through which we understand the mirror.
