This chapter discusses the process of change in a series of drawing representations in the case of one schizophrenic patient who initially produced a drawing “without a tree” in the Baum test or tree-drawing test. The Baum test is a clinical psychological technique used to understand affected patients. However, it is not uncommon for patients with refractory chronic schizophrenia to produce drawings “without a tree” or “not featuring a tree” in a general sense in response to the Baum test. Although such drawings are often considered to be mere manifestations of symptoms, they may contribute to the psychological understanding of schizophrenics. However, there is still no detailed research on this topic. In this longitudinal case study, one typical case was examined, and it was found that there was a process of separation and conjunction of opposites or contrasting pairs, whose importance was emphasized in Jung’s theory. Following these processes, drawings more frequently took on a shape more similar to a tree in a general sense. It suggests that the fundamental and essential individuation process does progress in schizophrenic patients, even if the expression looks delusional; however, additional research is needed to confirm this.
