Beschreibungen/Notizen
Documentary theatre is an umbrella term for the staging of records and documents that are directly derived from real-life events, rather than based on fictional plays. The chapter first provides some viewpoints in the debate around the documentary and the verbatim, whether one is allowed to alter or edit records or testimonies, what actually constitutes a document and what is considered as 'real'. These issues then are guides for three excursions into the field, first looking into who gets to speak on the stage, discussing Rimini Protokoll's 'experts of everyday life', reconciliation theatre, and the intriguing Five Easy Pieces by the Swiss director Milo Rau. Secondly, the documentary is used to investigate and question reality, rendering the theatre into a place for research journalism, as in the court case against Shell by the Dutch Anoek Nuyens and Rebekka de Wit. The third track describes how theatre of the real provides pathways for alternative and collaborative historiographies, including 'speculative documentary'.
