• This chapter descibes that the current paradigm of hospital-based, medically managed birth is flawed, mutable, and unsuitable for maternity disaster care and will inevitably be transformed by the challenges we face in our 21st-century world. It combines speculative fiction with critical analysis to transport the reader both back into the past and forward into an imagined near future to examine the changing cultural meanings assigned to place of birth. The chapter examines the social and political forces implicated in the wholesale shift in Aotearoa New Zealand of birth from home to hospital during the 20th century. It shows the current cultural consensus about hospital birth as safer to be a historical-social construct created under the influence of power and politics.
