• This chapter focuses on the emergence of this first and originary iteration of the coming-of-age genre with the pioneering example of Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre, “the archetype of the European Bildungsroman”. A new feature of traditional Bildungsromane was its parsing and pondering on definitions of nationhood and correct citizenship. Parzival’s formative process follows several of the Bildungsroman’s archetypal plot’s points. Parzival has a precocious imagination that his mother tries to suppress. Mirroring Parzival’s structure, the story begins with Tristan’s lineage, the knight Riwalin and Blanscheflur. Riwalin dies in battle at the hands of Morgan, a ruthless conqueror, and Blanscheflur dies of sorrow shortly after, foreshadowing the dreadful end of their son. The romantic union of the lovers comes in direct contrast with Isolde’s union to King Marke, whom she marries, all the while meeting Tristan in secret.
