  • This chapter analyzes how narcotrafficking, salsa music, and immigration connected the cities of Cali and New York during the last quarter of the twentieth century. Using newspaper archives, oral history interviews, and ethnographic analysis, the chapter explains how these three parallel processes intertwined, and analyzes the two logics that sustained their convergence. First, the plebeian values of the members of the Cali Cartel and their allegiance to the popular culture of the working-class neighborhoods where the leaders of the organization came from, their passion for soccer, and Afro-Cuban and salsa music. Second, the entrepreneurial vision that they developed over time based on an instrumental reason, and the use of corruption and violence for the accumulation of capital as a strategic end. The chapter proposes an alternative perspective for the study of narcotraffic in Colombia, one that considers transnational cultural circuits and the ways in which the cocaine and the music industries combined to open new channels for the insertion of the country to the globalized world.
