  • This chapter considers aspects of the relationship between the development and regulation of in vitro fertilization (IVF), pre-implantation genetic testing for monogenic or single-gene disorders (PGT-M, formerly known as pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD)) and mitochondrial replacement techniques (MRTs); critiques of reproductive technologies relating to notions of the "natural"; and women's interests. It argues that hostility to existing, new and developing technologies increases the difficulties and burdens that women face as they seek to live their working and/or family lives. This chapter considers aspects of the relationship between the development and regulation of in vitro fertilization (IVF), monogenic or single-gene disorders (PGT-M) and mitochondrial replacement techniques (MRTs); critiques relating to various senses of the "natural"; and women's interests. It draws on and contributes to a feminist bioethics perspective, arguing that hostility to existing, new and developing reproductive technologies increases the difficulties and burdens that many women face as they seek to live their working and/or family lives. From the birth of the first child by means of IVF, in 1978, the technique has been a very different way to conceive children from the scenario in which people do not need assistance. In the United Kingdom, PGT-M is an option available on the National Health Service for women and their partners. Two MRT techniques have been the subject of research in the United Kingdom - maternal spindle transfer and pronuclear transfer.
