  • Germany recorded a significant rise in number of right-wing extremists last year, after security agencies added thousands of members of country’s main far-right party to count. Until mid-1980s, critical criminology was mainly informed by strands of Marxist thought and was labeled radical criminology. There are now at least 15 types of critical criminology and new ones will likely emerge. The various types of critical criminology can be summed up as perspectives that view crime as: rooted in economic, social and political inequalities, along with social class divisions, racism and hate, and other forms of segmented social organization, reinforced and rationalized by culturally derived relativistic definitions of conforming, deviant, and criminal actions. Critical criminologists recognize that every society requires a mixture of formal and informal means of social control, but top priority goes to a “broader vision”. This entails suggesting policies targeting the key social, cultural, and economic forces that propel people into crime, such as family violence, poverty, and unemployment.
