  • The introduction highlights the innovative aspects of this study of the history of tourism in Italy for persons with disabilities, a relatively novel area of historiographical research. It describes the methodology adopted, provides a survey of existing international literature on the subject, and outlines the structure and contents of the book. This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book focuses on the history of tourism in Italy, from its development in the nineteenth century through most of the twentieth century. It analyzes health tourism during nineteenth and first half of twentieth century, examining the various types of destinations and the persons to whom they are tailored. The book then examines therapeutic tourism in Italian seaside resorts hosting hospices for young people suffering from scrofula or rickets. It also discusses a series of case studies of disabled tourists traveling alone or with their families, but in any case privately and not by means of any organization or association and focuses mainly on the nineteenth and twentieth century up to the outbreak of First World War. The book addresses religious tourism associated with Catholicism, by far the majority religion in Italy in the late nineteenth and much of the twentieth century.
