  • For many, writing is part of everyday life, a routine activity that helps them get through the day by recording recurring events and thoughts and organizing daily activities. The notion of everyday writing signals its continuous use and points to the unexceptional and ordinary conditions that characterize it. However, despite the detailed and careful work of multiple scholars, the notion of everyday writing itself is often imprecise and somewhat confusing. This may be due to the complexities of its meanings, indicating at the same time writing that occurs regularly, writing that is considered run-of-the-mill, and writing that captures the comings and goings of being in the world. In this chapter, we look at all three-routine writing, common writing, and writing about the everyday-by exploring everyday writing in the context of literacy studies and historical research. We also review how some of these researchers talk about people's uses of writing and writing practices and where the conceptual debates and agreements lie.
