  • Knowledge and conservation of the landscape, natural resources and the cultural and ecological processes that link and maintain them have been of concern to Mexicans. The Biosphere Reserves (BR) model was adapted to Mexico's landscapes and to the situation of Mexico's natural environment. There are more BRs in the south of Mexico, the humid and semi-humid warm part of the country, than in the arid and semi-arid north of the country, which comprises the largest proportion of Mexico. BioMexico has been an effective mechanism for facilitating the exchange of experiences, the sharing of information, and improving the management of the reserves. Mexico has been a member of the Ibero-American and Caribbean Network of Man and Biosphere Committees and Biosphere Reserves since 2005, actively participating in meetings of the network. BRs are the key to maintaining Mexico's megabiodiversity, its multicultural nature, and its continued importance as a centre for species domestication and diversification.
