  • It can be seen that scholars roughly share the same viewpoint in analyzing typical possessive and descriptive attributives. When it comes to what Zhu refers to as “quasi-attributives”, the consensus seems to be that they are atypical possessive constructions, in that they take the form of the possessive but express no possession. The properties as delineated by Taylor reflect the cognitive basis for the possessive construction in human language, and provide a comprehensive reference framework for us to understand the Chinese possessive in its narrow and broad senses. In order to identify a nominal as referential or non-referential, the most important is to rely on the context, rather than the lexical form, because referential and non-referential may take exactly the same form. The possessive meaning is inherent to the possessive construction as a static linguistic unit. When a static unit is used in a dynamic context, some contingent pragmatic meaning will result.
