Apocalyptic imagination directly shapes discussions of Christian ethics and digital technologies. This chapter explores how utopian and dystopian technological approaches map onto various Christian eschatologies. It details how the history of late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century social gospel and social ethics movements revised doctrines of eschatology in light of the social, political, and economic impact of industrialization, a prior technological evolution. In response to a more radical digital revolution, it argues that Christian ethics needs to expand the canons upon which we draw. As one example, the chapter engages science fiction along with global theologies of eschatology as an exercise in expanding and shifting the Christian apocalyptic imagination away from anti-Black, anti-nature, and anti-spiritual interpretations of technology. Thus, the first ethical task is a theological revision toward a justice-oriented eschatology, and the second is the application of this theological vision in movements like LoTEK and design justice.
