  • This chapter outlines our critical positioning of the functional linguistic knowledge base that we propose in response to ongoing debates in the field of world language education stemming from traditional approaches in language teaching, learning, and assessment. We examine two traditional approaches specifically that have been most pervasive and detrimental in their effects: (1) the monolingual bias in the framing and perception of language, and (2) the prescriptive, decontextualized approach to the teaching of language rules and grammar. After we deconstruct these traditional views in the field, we propose a view of translanguaging and a functional linguistic knowledge base as a way forward. Within this critical framing, we describe our engagement with world language teacher candidates in spaces to discuss and deconstruct the functions of language, understand the functions of language in their own lives, and apply this knowledge base to enact a critical world language pedagogy.
