Architectural form is an expressive medium worthy of deep study. This chapter introduces the reader to some of the fundamental science that activates that expression. What is it that makes inanimate objects and spaces seem so alive? How is it that some buildings appear dynamic, loud, and extroverted, while others give us a sense of quiet, stillness, and restraint? Within this chapter we lay out the foundational principles that young designers must confront in order to master the communicative power of form. The chapter also defines the relationships between intellectual and physical crafting that can be found throughout the book. This includes the study of basic architectonic effect, and the art and science of developing aggregated ordered objects that are greater than the sum of their parts. Finally, the chapter explains how studying the nature of architectonic objects makes one knowledgeable about the underlying science of architecture and allows them to develop mastery of architectural form and space.
