• Compared to the easy identification of the industrial and postindustrial city, the city in the developing world is a more complex phenomenon. For example, while the cities in the developing world are sites of industrial production, there is a rich variety including rapidly growing industrial cities in places such as Vietnam; some industrial areas such as Bangkok metro region that are moving up the value-added chain toward more advanced industrial production; and some, like Shanghai, shifting toward a postindustrial emphasis on services.
