  • In the United States, high rates of divorce and increases in nonmarital fertility have led to increasing rates of nonresident fatherhood and multiple partner fertility (MPF)-or the process of having biological children with more than one partner-which have negative consequences for men, families, and children. These demographic trends, as well as a growing awareness of the importance of father involvement in the lives of their children, have resulted in the need for a better understanding of nonresident father involvement and how it may be associated with men's MPF. In this chapter, we first provide an overview of recent demographic trends in men and women's relationship and fertility formation that have contributed to MPF. We next describe the theoretical perspectives that provide a framework for examining nonresident father involvement. Within this framework, we provide a brief review of the current research questions and empirical findings related to nonresident father involvement and MPF, while also introducing new research questions that have yet to be addressed. Specifically, a number of studies have examined whether and how MPF and the presence of new biological (and sometimes step) children affects men's involvement with prior children (Carlson & Furstenberg, 2007; Manning & Smock, 1999, 2000; Mincy & Huang, 2002); however, research on how involvement with prior children influences their subsequent fertility behaviors, including MPF, is limited.
