Reviewing the literature on the father's role in child development, Nash (1965, p 261) concluded that the "relative neglect of the father may have distorted our understanding of the dynamics of development and ... adversely affected the rearing of males." Nash's article was a catalyst for considerable research on father-child interactions during the remainder of the century. And yet, we continue to have insufficient answers to the basic question: What difference do fathers make in child development beyond their genetic contribution?
