Accounting for 4.5% of all childhood cancers, rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) is the most common soft tissue sarcoma in children under the age of 15 and has an incidence of 4.5 cases per million children (0–19 years old) per year in the United States between 1975 and 2005.

After neuroblastoma and Wilms' tumor, it is the third most common childhood extracranial solid tumor, and accounts for 60%3 of all childhood sarcomas and 10%–15% of all solid pediatric tumors. Approximately 26% of these tumors arise from the genitourinary (GU) tract (10% from bladder or prostate) and another 16% from pelvic or retroperitoneal sites (paratesticular region, perineum, vulva, vagina, and uterus).4–7 Since its discovery by Weber in 1854, extensive studies of the clinical and pathologic features of RMS have resulted in the development of uniform diagnostic criteria and prognostically relevant staging systems.8
