  • Hepatitis is an inflammatory condition of liver affecting approximately 435 million people around the world. It may be caused by five different viruses, namely hepatitis A, B, C, D and E. These hepatitis viruses are endemic to various geographical regions and populations. Although vaccines are available against hepatitis A, B and D viruses, millions of people, either native to low-income countries or in unvaccinated regions of high-income countries, are affected by these viruses every year. Also, no effective treatment for HAV infection is available yet, and the available HCV treatments are limited to preventing progression to cirrhosis by obtaining sustained viral remission. Therefore, exploring natural medicinal plants and plant-derived secondary metabolites might present an alternative, safe, and effective way to solving the hepatitis treatment conundrum. In this chapter, we discuss plants containing bioactive compounds reported to exhibit hepatoprotective properties. Nearly 55 medicinal plants and their bioactive compounds, including Ligustrum lucidum (oleanolic acid and ursolic acid), Glycyrrhiza glabra (glycyrrhizin), Citrus unshiu (3′,4′,5,6,7,8-hexamethoxyflavone), Silybum marianum (silibinin), Sophora flavescens (quinolizidine alkaloids) and Vaccinium corymbosum (proanthocyanidins), are enlisted. Further, we briefly discuss some ayurvedic plants with anti-hepatitis potential. We believe this chapter will affirm the vast potential of natural compounds in curing hepatitis, and assist natural anti-hepatitis drug development efforts. This chapter discusses plants containing bioactive compounds reported to exhibit hepatoprotective properties. It affirms the vast potential of natural compounds in curing hepatitis, and assist natural anti-hepatitis drug development efforts. Natural herbal medicines have been used in the treatment of numerous ailments since ancient times. Herbal drugs are widely popular owing to their low cost, less toxicity and high efficacy. The chapter encapsulates the studies on different medicinal and ayurvedic plants reported to exhibit hepatoprotective effects. Leaves of Moringa oleifera are suggested to be rich in vitamins, carotenoids, saponins, flavonoids, isothiocyanates, tannins and phytates, etc. In traditional medicine, its leaves extract is applied for its high anti-oxidant activity. Miso is a traditional Japanese seasoning, made by fermenting soybeans, barley, rice, wheat or cycad, with Aspergillus oryzae. It is typically rich in vitamins, minerals and amino acids. Curcuma longa is suggested to have beneficial effects against multiple conditions, such as helminthiasis, asthma and gonorrhea.
