The measurement of unsaturated coefficient of permeability has generally been limited to the low suction ranges. The objective of this paper was to measure the unsaturated coefficient of permeability in the low water content range for a consolidated clayey silt soil. Steady-state evaporation tests were conducted in an environmentally controlled room. A low hydraulic flow was applied at the bottom of the soil specimen. The flow was controlled using a GDS control system. Details of the evaporation column, sample preparation, and steady-state evaporation test are described. The soil-water characteristic curve and saturated coefficient of permeability of the soil were independently measured. The laboratory tests data were analyzed and the unsaturated coefficient of permeability function for the Botkin clayey silt specimen was determined. The steady-state evaporation method used in this study proved to be a relatively rapid method for measuring the unsaturated coefficient of permeability.
