• Taberner examines the German-Jewish life in W. G. Sebald's Die Ausgewanderten and Austerlitz. The claim that Sebald is immune to the sentimentality of Jewish suffering has not been paid to the question of whether his writing of Jewish fates restricts itself to "celebrate, mourn and commemorate individuals and communities lost in the Holocaust. It may be that even as he excavates Jewish lives, Taberner also--perhaps unintentionally--opens up a form of melancholia that frames Jews and Germans as traumatized victims of the catastrophe of modernity.
