Integrated antennas on electromagnetic band-gap structures have found many useful applications. This paper characterizes the properties of microstrip dipoles on a planar artificial periodic structure. A rigorous full-wave double vector-integral-equation method is used to determine the
properties of microstrip dipoles including antenna gain, radiation patterns, and input impedance. Two stages of the moment method are required. The Green's function for a planar periodic structure is first found by solving a volume integral equation in conjunction with an analytic array-scanning
scheme. This Green's function is implemented into another integral equation to find the current distribution over strip dipoles. The effects of periodic material layer to the antenna input impedance, mutual impedance, and radiation efficiency are investigated within the content of electromagnetic
band-gap structures. The method is applicable to general problems of antennas loaded on an otherwise periodic structure.
