Beschreibungen/Notizen
Literary tourism, of which the literary trail is an integral part, is a relatively new phenomenon. As South Africa's tourism market grows, new avenues of interest have emerged, and literary tourism has become a potential growth area. This article draws from the experience of the Literary Tourism in KwaZulu-Natal research project, operational over the past five years, and it explores the phenomenon of the literary trail. The article seeks, first, to understand the literary trail historically as a kind of secular pilgrimage to visit sites associated with writers and imagined spaces. Second, it looks at the development of the first literary trails within the research project: the reasons for the choice of writers or areas, the constructed nature of such trails, and their potential to create awareness of writers in KwaZulu-Natal.
