This article gives an overview of the Religion and Dialogue in Modern Societies (ReDi) project. The article sketches the main questions of the research, it's interdisciplinary composition, the metropolitan areas in Europe involved, the different levels of research and some of the main results. The overall research approach of ReDi is explained, and the focus is directed to particular elements of ReDi such as dialogical theology and urban interreligious practice. This could serve as background for the educational research, which will not be dealt with in the present article, as it forms the focus of the other articles presented in this special issue of Religion & Education.
